Smarties raining from the sky

Well, whaddya know, it’s that time again: National Smarties® Day! You’re probably thinking, “I honestly can’t believe Smarty®, my favorite address verification company, has its own day celebrated on a national scale.” And if you’re thinking that, let me congratulate you on your finely tuned instincts—the existence of such a day strains belief.

We’re talking about Smarties, the candy, people. You know, those tart, powdery discs that resoundingly answer the question, “What if chalk, but delicious?” Care to learn more about National Smarties Day? You’re in luck—there's plenty to unwrap.

A sweet history

Armed with a dream, a smile, and two repurposed machines originally used to create gunpowder pellets (no, really), Smarties founder Edward Dee opened the first Smarties factory in 1949. Dee’s uniquely tart treats quickly caught on in the US and Canada (where they’re sold as Rockets®), and the rest is history.

75 years later, the Smarties Candy Company is still going strong under the leadership of the Dee family; Edward’s granddaughters, Sarah Dee, Jessica Dee Sawyer, and Liz Dee, lead the company as co-presidents.

So, what’s the secret to Smarties’ remarkable longevity? It helps that just about anybody can enjoy them. According to their colorful website, they’re vegan, gluten-free, and free of peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans, shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, soybeans, wheat, and worries. They also don’t melt, making them a perfectly mess-free pacifier for car seat riders.

Here are some more fun facts about Smarties:

  • Smarties come in 6 unique flavors
    • White = Orange cream (intriguing)
    • Yellow = Pineapple (better than lemon)
    • Pink = Cherry (expected)
    • Green = Strawberry (pardon me?)
    • Purple = Grape (obvious, unchallenging)
    • Orange = Orange (no cream, no problem)
  • There are 15 Smarties in a standard roll.
  • Smarties 2 factories produce approximately 2.5B rolls of Smarties every year.
  • Smarties candies don’t make you smarter; they were named smarties because they’re tart and “smart the tongue.”

  • In case you’re in 5th grade and trying to be edgy, exhaling crushed-up Smarties creates a captivating illusion that will make your friends think you’re smoking a cigarette. Don’t ask me how I know.
  • The Smarties website allows you to buy 27,000 unwrapped Smarties tablets, and no one can stop you from swimming in them like Scrooge McDuck.

Wrap it up, folks!

Smarty celebrates National Smarties Day because we both have the same goal: offering a simple, reliable, and satisfying product. Just like a kid in a candy store gets a rush from crushing up these bad boys and seeing how many can fit in your mouth (ok, maybe the rush is from the sugar), we here at Smarty get a rush from seeing your address databases crush duplicate addresses and validate databases in bulk

At this point, you’re probably thinking, “Wow, that’s a pretty tenuous connection!” Dear reader, your instincts remain razor sharp, but for the love of Dee, just let us have this one. Wanna make your day a little sweeter? Add a little cream to your orange, if you will. Why not grab a roll of Smarties candy and give us a call to see how you can get smarter address solutions with sweeter results? Happy National Smarties Day, ya big goofs!

Because who doesn’t love juggling one more thing during the holiday season…? A major shift in the address-verification landscape is approaching at the beginning of the new year. On January 25, 2026, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will officially retire its long-standing Web Tools APIs, a free API that previously allowed for approximately 5 address lookups per transaction. This includes the legacy USPS Address Information APIs that many organizations have depended on for years. Under USPS’s new API structure, the default quota for many services, including the Addresses API, is 60 requests per hour.
